World's First Inheritance Computer

Your Bitcoin May Be Secure.
Your Inheritance Isn’t.

Citadel Vault is an air‑gapped inheritance computer for serious Bitcoin holders.

The Vault backs up your hardware wallets and extends their effective life from roughly 10 years toward a 1,000 year horizon with durable, modular storage. It encrypts your instructions and legal documents, and its built in advisor gives your heirs a clear, non technical recovery path, with no subscriptions, custodians, KYC, or third party risk.

CitadelVault, the air-gapped inheritance computer
3.7-5M Bitcoin permanently lost. Not stolen, not spent. Gone.
~25% Of all Bitcoin ever mined is permanently inaccessible.
45 min To complete a full inheritance plan with the 21sats Wizard.
The Problem

Bitcoin Doesn't Disappear.
It Gets Abandoned.

Between 3.7 million and 5 million Bitcoin (nearly a quarter of all Bitcoin ever mined) is permanently inaccessible. Not stolen. Not spent. Gone, because no one left behind a way to reach it.

Most of it didn't disappear due to carelessness. It disappeared because self-custody is genuinely hard, and there was no complete system for what happens when the keyholder dies, becomes incapacitated, or simply can't remember.

The threats aren't hypothetical:

Existing solutions weren't built for this.

Hardware wallets protect your Bitcoin while you're alive. They offer nothing for what comes after. Managed custody platforms require ongoing trust in a third party, monthly fees, and the assumption that the company will still exist and cooperate when your family needs access. DIY setups can work, but they demand sourcing the right components, executing complex technical procedures, and trusting that grieving family members can follow them correctly under pressure.

And none of it addresses your full digital life. Passwords, 2FA keys, encrypted drives, exchange accounts, digital IDs: your wealth extends far beyond a single seed phrase.

Without a complete system, your Bitcoin doesn't pass to your family. It vanishes.

The Solution

We Put the Advisor
Inside the Machine.

Two years ago, we founded 21sats Inheritance Protocol to help Bitcoiners pass down their generational wealth securely and privately. Our offline protocol has been vetted by clients in dozens of jurisdictions worldwide. It works. But it required a 15-hour setup process, guided one-on-one by an advisor.

So we built CitadelVault: the world's first digital inheritance computer. A single device that compresses 15 hours of advisor-led work into a 45-minute automated wizard. It ships with everything your family needs. Nothing to source separately.

Built from experience. Not from theory.

We know exactly where people get stuck. We watched it happen, client after client, and we documented every failure point. CitadelVault is the hardware answer to everything we learned was broken. But it's not only hardware.

Every CitadelVault ships with the complete 21sats Inheritance Protocol: the same methodology refined through years of real client work. The hardware makes it accessible. The protocol makes it work.

One device. Nothing missing.

It's not a hardware wallet. It's not a subscription service. It's not a DIY guide. It's the digital inheritance computer that should have existed from the beginning.

How It Works

A Complete Inheritance Plan
in Three Steps.

You do the work once. Your family benefits forever.

01 Run the 45-Minute Wizard

What used to take 15 hours now takes 45 minutes.

CitadelVault arrives pre-configured and ready to use. Power it on and launch the step-by-step automated wizard. It guides you through a complete inventory of your digital assets: Bitcoin wallets, passwords, accounts, signing devices, and more. All 20 categories. Nothing gets missed. Expert support is available throughout. No technical background required.

02 Distribute the Keys

Encrypted. Safe to share. Impossible to steal.

CitadelVault generates encrypted offline backups of your secrets and stores them on a Vault Drive, using a sharded key across Vault Cards. The entire system (CitadelVault, Vault Drive, Vault Cards, and scanner) is compact enough to store in a standard safe or safe deposit box. Geographic dispersion is built into the protocol. Place your Vault Cards in separate locations: a safe, a safety deposit box, with your attorney, or with a trusted family member. No single location holds enough to access your assets alone. Your legal documents travel with them.

03 Your Heirs Are Ready

A clear plan. Not a mystery to solve.

When the time comes, your heirs use CitadelVault and the distributed recovery cards to reconstruct your digital estate. The built-in recovery advisor guides every step. Our team is available throughout. No technical knowledge required. No guesswork. A clear, executable plan your heirs can follow on the worst day of their lives.

The Device

No Subscriptions.
No Expiry Date.
No KYC.
No Compromises.

CitadelVault runs on a purpose-adapted handheld computer with Vault OS, a hardened, air-gapped operating system designed exclusively for secret management and inheritance planning. It has never connected to the internet. It never will.

  • Compact handheld form factor: the entire system fits in a standard safe or safe deposit box
  • Built-in display and keyboard: everything you need, nothing you don't
  • Strictly isolated from the Internet—no web-capable hardware or software networking layers.
  • Self-custodial and air-gapped by design: the device keeps no plaintext keys or secrets. Your encrypted vault lives on the Vault Drive, and the keys to unlock it are split across your Vault Cards.
  • Vault OS pre-installed and ready to run
  • Ongoing software updates included for the supported life of the product

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions.

The Basics
CitadelVault is a purpose-built air-gapped computer for digital inheritance. Bitcoin is at the heart of it, but your digital life is far more than Bitcoin keys. The system is designed to securely capture and pass on everything that matters: Bitcoin and crypto wallets, hardware device credentials, passwords, 2FA tokens, exchange accounts, email and bank accounts, files, safety deposit box details, legal documents, and trusted contacts.

The underlying protocol has been refined through years of real-world use with real customers. CitadelVault takes the same proven cryptography and builds it into a guided system that anyone can set up and anyone can use when the time comes.
Anyone who holds meaningful Bitcoin and has thought seriously about what happens to it when they die. If you've ever written a seed phrase on paper and felt uneasy about it, or tried to explain Bitcoin recovery to a family member and realized how fragile your current plan is, CitadelVault is for you. It's also built for estate planning professionals who advise clients on Bitcoin inheritance.
Steel plates are excellent for durability. They do nothing to protect the seed from whoever finds it: family members, executors, lawyers, or anyone who gains access to your estate. CitadelVault encrypts your keys with military-grade cryptography, distributes recovery across multiple Vault Cards in separate locations, and generates the legal documents your heirs actually need to act on their inheritance. A seed phrase on metal is a component. CitadelVault is the complete system.
Casa and Unchained are subscription-based custodial services. You pay ~$250/year and they hold a key on your behalf. When you stop paying, or if they go out of business, your recovery plan changes. CitadelVault is a one-time purchase with no ongoing fees and no third-party keyholders. Your keys stay in your possession, on your hardware, under your control. Forever.
They're complementary, not competing. Coldcard is a signing device, excellent for authorizing Bitcoin transactions during your lifetime. CitadelVault is an inheritance device designed to hold encrypted backups of your keys and give your heirs a clear, tested path to access them after you're gone. Many Bitcoiners will use both: Coldcard for daily signing, CitadelVault for inheritance-grade backups. If you already own a Coldcard, your seed can be backed up inside CitadelVault in minutes.
Security & Technology
CitadelVault uses AES-256-GCM authenticated encryption with Argon2id key derivation, the same encryption standard certified under NIST FIPS 197 and used by Signal and 1Password. The "authenticated" part matters: any attempt to tamper with your encrypted vault is mathematically detectable. The Argon2id key derivation means that even if an attacker gets physical access to your encrypted backup, brute-forcing your password would require millions of dollars in hardware and energy. At current electricity prices, testing one billion passwords against a single Citadel vault costs roughly $500,000, and that's before hardware costs.
Yes. There are no wireless chips, no network hardware in the device. Data moves in and out via QR codes, Vault Cards, and USB drives only. An air gap is only meaningful if it's enforced in hardware. Software-only air gaps can be bypassed by software. CitadelVault has no network hardware to exploit.

The CitadelVault is also stateless: it stores nothing. If someone stole the device, there would be nothing on it to steal. Your secrets live on the Vault Drive. Your keys live on your Vault Cards. The CitadelVault processes, but never retains.
Yes. All cryptographic code is open source, auditable, and publicly available on GitHub. We use no proprietary cryptography, no backdoors, and no cloud key escrow. The encryption libraries we rely on (aes-gcm and argon2 Rust crates) have extensive public audit histories of their own.
Honestly: not yet. A pre-launch internal code review has been completed. An independent third-party cryptographic audit is scheduled for Q3 2026 and will be published openly in full, including any findings. We will not hide critical feedback. If you want to review the code yourself before the formal audit, the repository is open.
AES-256 is classified as quantum-resistant by NIST. Grover's algorithm (the most relevant quantum attack against symmetric encryption) reduces 256-bit security to 128-bit effective security. 128 bits is still considered computationally infeasible to attack for the foreseeable future. We will also issue software updates if the security landscape changes materially.
There is no recovery. This is intentional, and it's a feature, not a bug. No one can decrypt your vault without your passphrase. This is what true self-custody means. The NFC Shamir recovery cards exist precisely so you're not depending on memory alone: distribute the cards to trusted people or secure locations, and any two of three cards together can reconstruct access, with no passphrase required.
Inheritance Setup
Two steps. During setup, your encrypted vault keys are backed up to an extra set of Vault Cards. You distribute those cards to trusted people or secure locations; any two of the three are enough.

A failsafe backup can also be used by your heirs in the form of a metal plate.
Think of them as keys, but no single card is the whole key. Each card holds one piece of the puzzle. You need any two of three cards together to unlock the vault. Tap them to the Citadel device, or to any NFC-enabled phone using the recovery app, and they reconstruct the decryption key automatically.

The cards themselves are the same chip technology used in banking cards and biometric passports, PIN-protected and tamper-resistant. If someone finds one card, they get nothing. They need two. That's the point: no single location, no single person, no single point of failure.
It's a cryptographic technique that splits a secret (your encryption key) into multiple shares, where any defined minimum number of shares can reconstruct the original. CitadelVault supports 2-of-3 (any 2 cards of 3) and, on the Pro tier, 2-of-4 and 3-of-5 configurations. The math ensures that holding one share gives an attacker zero information about the underlying secret.
The Citadel legal document engine generates court-ready inheritance templates covering 23 jurisdictions. Documents include: instructions for heirs, executor guidance, digital asset schedules for wills, and access authorization letters. These are designed to work alongside a conventional will or estate plan, not replace it. For complex situations, the Pro+ tier includes a jurisdiction-specific legal document review with the Citadel team.
Your vault doesn't depend on us. The encryption format is an open specification, and every archival disc shipped with the device includes a standalone recovery script that runs on any standard laptop: no Citadel hardware required, no internet connection, no company in the loop. The protocol behind CitadelVault has been in real-world use with customers for years before this product existed. We built CitadelVault to make that protocol accessible, but the underlying system was never dependent on any single company, and neither is your inheritance plan.
The Product
CitadelVault is purpose-built, air-gapped hardware running Vault OS, built from industry-leading, open-source components and sourced from our OEM partners. The hardware stack is designed for physical air-gappability, a full Linux environment, and long-term repairability, meeting the same standards that define serious Bitcoin hardware, with every component selected for reliability, longevity, and inheritance-focused computing. CitadelVault hardware is supported and repaired for the life of the computer, and it is also designed to be user-repairable for those who prefer to service their own devices.
Millennial Drive is an archival optical disc system rated for 1,000 years by independent testing. Unlike standard optical discs or hard drives, Millennial Discs engrave data into a stone-like layer that doesn't degrade over time. For inheritance storage (where the backup may sit untouched for decades before anyone needs it) we consider this the only responsible long-term storage medium. The Vault Pro includes a Millennial Drive and disc media.
